Basic Driving Lessons, For New And Seasoned Drivers

It is said that if all the rule books of ethical living were condensed to a single maxim, it would be 'love thy neighbours'. Unfortunately, driving lessons seem to be more complex than ethics -- try hard as I can, I only managed to sum up safe driving practice into three categories, or should we say, categorical imperatives. Here is the holy trinity that should be followed by all drivers, new and veterans alike.

Use turn signals

Signalling at every turn should be drilled into the minds of new drivers so that by constant practice, this becomes an instinct. Seasoned drivers likewise should never forget this most basic of all driving lessons. Before turning, always make a signal: remember, turn equals 'turn on light'. Always check your blind spot over your shoulder to make sure you see the areas your mirror cannot see. Also -- and even seasoned drivers forget this -- make a signal when changing lanes. Always make sure to check your blind spot, as a vehicle could be right behind you, but not always be visible in your mirror.

Caution at intersection

Intersections are the site where a great majority of accidents happen. Don't forget your driving lessons when approaching stops -- make sure that your car fully stops, then check your left and right, and then check your left and right again before crossing the intersection. At yield signs, decrease your speed and keep ready at the brake pedal, passing only when it is clear no other vehicles are crossing.

Practice makes perfect

Driving techniques, when practiced constantly and diligently, become a way of life. Soon there will be no need to keep reminding yourself of rules and hypothetical situations, as doing the things you learn at your driving lessons becomes instinct. While training, new drivers should practice lots of manoeuvres like parallel parking, three-point turns, or U-turns. Look for parking lots and other empty areas where you can practice these manoeuvres, and use road cones to simulate the proximity of other vehicles.

After all these lessons, remember that the main point of getting driving lessons (which, by the way, is not merely being able to get a driving license and showing it off to your friends) is public safety, for yourself as well as for others on the road. Good driving habits and, dare I say, living an ethical life depend on you taking your driving lessons to heart.
